Joined the NFA

I just joined the NFA, I encourage  anyone reading to join and help support this organization. One that specifically helps fight   oppressive Canadian gun laws and stands up for Canadian gun owners.

They are largely responsible for  getting rid of the  gun registry a few years ago

Day at the Range

March 9th

DCIM101GOPROSandra and I went off to the Stittsville Range today. We had a great time, it was  cold but not that biting winter cold we have had as of late.  I can deal with -1 and above quite nicely. Today we brought the .22 win mag and the .223 X-Bolt. Did not do to bad, for  not having shot most of the winter. Sandra has improved hugely since her passing the PAL course and we see nothing but  more improvement going forward. I was able to test some of my loads and will be analyzing the results. That is the fun part of reloading, testing new loads. 🙂

looking forward to next week, and also to when the 200 yard  range opens….

The Savage model 93FV .22 WMR

Savage22WMG

The Savage 93 FV

A great target rifle. It is easily termed a “Tack Driver”  The 22 WMR (Win Mag) weighs in at 6 lbs, is 39.75 inches long and has a 16 in 1 twist. Comes with a 5 round mag which you will want to upgrade to the 10 round almost immediately. The heavy 21″ barrel allows you to shoot all afternoon without it heating up and is  very consistent.

Half inch groupings at 100 yards are common. On this gun I have the Scorpion Optics Copperhead Varmint 4-16 x 44 AO.  An excellent scope right out to 300+ yards. ( a wee bit of overkill for a 22 WMR but as Sandra upgrades rifles she will have a scope she is comfortable with already)  Some would say a 22 win mag could not be used out to 300 yards and yes it is a challenge but it can be done.

Seeing as we love to shoot, we are going for targets and the 22 WMR has no problem reaching out there. Sandra is becoming quite proficient at 100 yards. This is her step up from  the 22 Remington 597 , she has seen a 100% improvement in shot placement and enjoyment. I had a lot of fun setting up the savage for her and also enjoy iy not only for it accuracy but the economy of the ammunition. We are both looking forward to the 2014 season.

Let the games begin 🙂

Congrats to Sandra

Congratulations go out to Sandra!

She completed and Passed!!! her PAL certification.

We Love to Shoot sends a big “Well done!”  You will now be able to actually ask to see and be able to examine guns at stores like LeBarons, who even with me there would not let her touch a gun.

Good Luck in your next round at the Range now that you can do it without me by your side 🙂

Mosin Nagant 91/30 7.62 x 54, 1943 Russia

The Mosin Nagant 91/30  7.62 x 54, 1943 made in Russia was the next acquisition after the SKS. The nice thing about surplus military rifles is their availability and low cost. The ammo is surplus and corrosive but as long as you clean it and take care of it you can have a lot of fun. I was intrigued  with the Mosin after watching the movie ” Enemy at the Gate” the classic WWII sniper movie.

I picked up this one and , as with the SKS spent many hours cleaning it.

Quite the difference in the number of parts from a Bolt (Mosin) action to a semi auto .(SKS)

SKS Type 56, 7.62 x 39, 1963 China

Well I got one of those SKS packages , Gun and a box of ammo, 1400 rounds… for a great price (under 375.00) (un Issued, which means even tho its from 1963 it was never used)

The SKS Type 56,  7.62 x 39,  1963 made in China.  The ammo is surplus and corrosive, which means after a day at the range… there is cleaning to be done beyond what one might do for a more modern rifle. Below you  see the unboxing and the cleaning took quite a few hours. I researched online the best techniques to get the cosmoline off and the one i chose was a mix of a lot of advice. What I ended up doing was  boiling the metal parts that would  fit in the pot and using brake cleaner on the rest. The wooden parts I used a combo of dish soap and  “Simple Green”

Oh By the Way don’t put the gas tube in boiling water with the wooden piece still attached, if I made one mistake that was it, the shellac started to dissolve too. I tried to  mask it with some stain but gave up and chalked it to experience.  I would say the best cleaning was the boiling water and the brake cleaner they both worked well. Once I was done I oiled it all up and header to the range. It was Great 350 rounds later I was back at home smiling and cleaning.

Well this was October 2013 ish.SKS unbox423

Oh yes and the absolute joy of getting to clean all the cosmoline off…

And finally … ahhhh clean…. click on the image to the right to get a close up look at the parts

I regret not taking a shot of the close up before I cleaned them but I was covered in cosmo and was not about to touch my camera.
